Our Agricultural
Method

We want our farming methods to be kind to the planet and all of its living creatures. The following principles guide us as we experiment with and continually develop this agricultural practice.

Guiding Agricultural Principles at Ametsuchi No Uta

  • Absolutely no agricultural chemicals, fertilizer (chemical or organic), animal manure, antibiotics/fungicides, or postharvest chemicals
  • Avoid overusing machinery; prioritize working by hand and naked-eye observation
  • Stimulate microbial activity in soil with 100% natural plant-based revitalizers, and build soil crumb structure to allow synergetic effects to occur

(We have developed our own unique soil revitalizers. They are registered as JAS-certified organic agricultural materials)
  • Always adjust ridges by hand after mechanical ridging
  • Plant seeds directly in the ground
  • Reframe “weeds” as companion plants, and manage plants in ridges and furrows seasonally
  • Use crop residues from only our own fields to make unique, no-turn compost
  • Don’t till rice straw into rice fields (since it leads to CO2 problems)
  • Save seeds to preserve local and unique varieties, regenerate seeds stores in a way that resists environmental influence, and develop new varieties through careful selection

Benefits of Ametsuchi No Uta Agricultural Method

  • By avoiding the use of agrochemicals, fertilizers, and fungicides (even organic ones), growers are not exposed to unhealthy substances and there’s no need for hazardous materials management, resulting in an overall safer farm
  • Follows the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by not using agricultural materials that might damage the environment or contribute to global warming
  • Significant reduction of fuel expenses and farming material costs
  • Does not impact plants, animals, or insects; zero burden on the ecosystem
  • No fertilizer or agrochemical erosion and no impact on rivers
  • No chemical substances from soil evaporating or drifting into the air, which means no spread of plant disease from bad moisture balance in the air
  • Using only seeds saved from our own crops cuts out the cost of buying seeds; our method ensures there are plenty for the next year
  • No worries about seeds of unknown origin; no risk of accidentally using seeds that are weak to disease and seeds with low germination rates
  • Saving and carrying on local seeds and plant varieties can create a strong agricultural foundation that can set the local area apart from the rest
